Why do people own pitbulls?

Now before you read, understand I have owned a pitbull before, it sadly ped away when another pitbull ripped it to shreds in my home. I can't count how many times I have opened the newspaper to a story about a pitbull attacking someone, or tearing apart other pets. I read a statistical study that weighs pitbulls as the most dangerous domestic dogs due to their temperment. I don't understand why there are still few restrictions protecting the public from irresponsible pet owners and their flesh eating beasts?
